Beautiful Burl Wood Vintage Desk Makeover

Beautiful Burl Wood

Have you heard of burl wood?  It’s gorgeous!  Burl wood is a type of wood used by artists to create sculptures and other items, such as clocks and even some forms of furniture. It is highly prized by artists because of its unique shapes and ring patterns. Can you see why I would hesitate to paint over this wood?

History

This wood is a type of fast growing, abnormal growth found on some trees. It grows because the tree has experienced some sort of environmental stress or damage.  The number of trees that produce burl wood is quite low. In addition, certain areas tend to create more than others, because all or many of the trees in a particular location are likely to be attacked by the same fungus or insects. Certain species also tend to be more susceptible to attacks and, therefore, more likely to develop burl wood. For this reason, certain types are more rare and prized than others.

How to Preserve this Burl Wood & Update the Desk

Naturally, after learning more about this unique wood there was no way I would even consider painting over it and covering it up.  Thankfully my customer agreed. We decided to enhance the beauty of the burl as well as the hardware.  Isn’t the whole point of this to enhance, preserve and beautify?  There was a little damage to the top of the desk, so repairs were in order, and then we were on our way.

The Hardware

The hardware was pretty grimy so I made sure to clean them up really well and refresh them to as close as a natural finish as possible.  We went with an antique gold finish.  Once the layers of dirt were removed they were able to really shine and compliment the piece perfectly.

The desk and chair were hand painted a creamy vanilla and distressed just enough to bring attention to the curves and little-carved flowers in the piece.  The chair was brought back to life with a gorgeous fabric print in soft blues, greens, and cream – the perfect amount of color!

Mahogany & Mushroom End Tables

Mahagony Tables

Let’s chat about these vintage mahogany tables. They came to me tired and worn, water stained and a bit ragged but had so much life left to them.  Being made of solid mahogany with the label to prove it, I knew they had already had many years of life behind them and so much history.  The hardware, though dirty was gorgeous underneath!  They needed to be rescued.

Just the Woods, LLC – Textured in Tiffany

Textured in Tiffany

Hey all! If you follow my facebook page then you may know that I’ve been participating in a bloggers contest. It’s called the “Fab Furniture Flippin Contest” and the theme is “Come on Let Your Colors Burst”.. I truly feel there’s a fine line between tastefully colorful and obnoxious. I would like to think I stay on the side of tastefully colorful because I LOVE color!! No one should fear color in their homes. I’ll start with the ‘before’ pic, it has such pretty details and curves. It has a bit of a regal look to it and at first glance, one would think to paint it neutral cream and maybe highlight with gold, or white and silver. BLAH! BORING!jeanette

The Project

I say no to neutral and decided she wanted to be textured in Tiffany!  I have to admit I spent more hours on her than I had planned or hoped, but that happens sometimes.  To draw attention to the drawers I layered and crackled and let a little color peek through.  Under the neutral creamy white there are layers of blue and lavender.  How fun!Crackled painted furnitureI used my neutral white as an accent color and made sure to bring attention to all the little details.
