When it comes to making cashew milk all you really need is cashews and water. Anything extra is just that – extra. I prefer to use raw cashews and I get them online here: cashews. Try to stay away from roasted and salted when you make homemade cashew milk.

I keep my cashews on the counter in an air tight container. This allows the kids to see them and grab them when they are looking for a snack.

In fact, I recently reorganized my pantry items with these clear containers. I notice the kids grabbing nuts and dried fruit more now that they are visible and available. These are the containers I have: Pantry containers.

How to Make Homemade Cashew Milk

First, place your cashews in a bowl or container. Next, add water to your cashews.

This is an unmeasured amount and is simply for soaking purposes. Make sure to add enough water to cover all of the cashews. Let the cashews sit in water for at least 3-4 hours, but preferably overnight. Soaking your cashews allows them to soften nicely.

If you prefer not to wait, you can use boiling water and let the cashews soak for only 30 minutes.

Blending Cashews

Once your cashews have soaked and softened you will want to drain the water and add the cashews to a high speed blender.

If you prefer a little flavor you can add vanilla extract. I only add one teaspoon to my homemade cashew milk recipe.

Blend on high until your cashews have fully incorporated with the water. This can take up to 2 minutes, or more depending on your blender.

The great thing and main difference between cashew milk and almond milk is that you do not need to strain the cashew milk the way you would need to with homemade almond milk. The cashews are soft enough that they blend into a delicious creamy dairy free milk.

Store your homemade cashew milk in an air tight container in the refrigerator. I tend to make this cashew milk recipe in small batches because it tends to only last a few days.

You can use this dairy free milk alternative in any recipe that would call for traditional milk or almond milk. I love it in my tea every day. If you prefer it less creamy you can play around with the amount of water. More water will make the cashew milk less creamy. Also, make sure to shake the milk before use as the cashews may settle in the container.
