You only need a few essentials to prepare a tasty side dish in your air fryer. Here are the basics to get you started. Also, make sure to check out my healthy cooking essentials for basic kitchen necessities.
Ingredients:
- Assorted vegetables (e.g., broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, bell peppers, zucchini, asparagus)
- Olive oil or avocado oil cooking spray
- Salt and pepper (optional)
- Seasonings of your choice (e.g., garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, Italian seasoning)
You will also need an air fryer. Some concerns exist about certain air fryers using potentially harmful chemicals in their nonstick coatings, but according to my (limited) research, Ninja air fryers appear to be safe. This is the air fryer that I have, it is the Ninja Foodi, an all-in-one – air fryer, pressure cooker, slow cooker, and steamer.
You can also find other sizes, and types of air fryers online to suit your personal preference and budget: air fryers.
How to Cook Vegetables in an Air Fryer
Keep in mind that cooking temperatures and times may vary slightly with each make and model.
First, preheat your air fryer: Most air fryers require preheating. Set the temperature to either 350 or 375°F (190°C) and let it preheat for about 3-5 minutes with the lid closed.
Prepare the vegetables: Wash and dry the vegetables thoroughly. Cut them into smaller sizes if needed, to ensure even cooking. Larger pieces may require longer cooking times.
Season the vegetables: In a bowl, toss the vegetables with a small amount of olive oil or spray them lightly with cooking spray. This will help the seasonings stick and promote crispiness. Season with salt, pepper, and any other desired seasonings or herbs.
Arrange the vegetables in the air fryer basket: Place the seasoned vegetables in the air fryer crisper basket in a single layer. Avoid overcrowding the basket, as this can prevent proper air circulation and result in uneven cooking. You may need to cook the vegetables in batches depending on the quantity and size of your air fryer.
Cook the vegetables: Set the air fryer to cook at 350 or 375°F (190°C) for 10-15 minutes, depending on the type and size of the vegetables. Halfway through the cooking time, shake the basket or use spatula tongs to flip the vegetables to ensure even browning.
Check for doneness: After the cooking time is complete, check the vegetables for doneness. They should be tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. If necessary, continue cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes.
Serve and enjoy: Once the vegetables are cooked to your liking, transfer them to a serving dish and enjoy immediately. They pair well with dips, sauces, or as a side dish to your favorite main course.
