What You Need to Make This Applesauce Coffee Cake Recipe

Whether it is apple season or not, you can make this healthy apple cinnamon coffee cake with a few basic ingredients. 

Delicious Coffee Cake Batter

  • 1 1/4 cups gluten-free 1:1 flour (baking or all-purpose flour)
  • 3/4 cup coconut sugar
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp cloves
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • 3/4 cup applesauce
  • 1/4 water
  • 1/4 coconut oil, melted
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts

Topping & Center Layer

  • 1 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp coconut sugar
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 Tbsp maple syrup

Ingredient Tips and Substitutions

You can use either storebought or homemade applesauce. I am using my easy applesauce recipe for this apple cake.

To keep this applesauce cake gluten-free I am using Bobs Red Mill gluten-free baking flour. I am also using coconut sugar instead of brown sugar. Coconut sugar is always my preferred sugar when baking healthy coffee cake recipes.

How to Make Healthy Applesauce Coffee Cake

First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Then add the flour to a large bowl, and add in the coconut sugar.

Next, add the baking soda, baking powder, salt, and warm spices (cinnamon, cloves, allspice) to the bowl. Whisk the flour mixture together and set aside.

In a separate bowl combine the whole egg and applesauce.

Then add the coconut oil and water to the bowl.

Stir to combine and then pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.

Combine the cake batter either by hand or with an electric hand mixer. Then gently fold in the raisins and walnuts.

In a separate small bowl combine the cinnamon, sugar, and nutmeg for the cinnamon streusel topping and middle of the cake layer. 

Pour half of the batter into a parchment paper-lined loaf pan.

Then sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture all over the center of the cake.

Next, pour the rest of the batter into the pan and sprinkle the top of the cake with the rest of the cinnamon sugar streusel. Lastly, top the cake with the chopped walnuts and maple syrup.

Place the prepared pan in the preheated oven and bake for 35 minutes until it passes the toothpick test. 

Easy Healthy Applesauce Coffee Cake Recipe

When done, remove the moist cake from the oven and place it on a wire rack to cool.

Lift the cake from the loaf pan with the parchment paper and let the cake cool completely before slicing.

  6. Next, gently fold in the raisins and walnuts.
  7. Then line a loaf pan with parchment. paper.
  8. In a small bowl mix the cinnamon, coconut sugar, and nutmeg for the topping and center layer.
  9. Pour half of the cake batter into the pan. Then sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture over the batter.
  10. Next, pour the rest of the batter into the pan and top with the rest of the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  11. Then sprinkle the top of the cake with the chopped walnuts and drizzle with the maple syrup.
  12. Bake for 35 minutes, or until it passes the toothpick test.
  13. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  14. Enjoy.
