Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie Recipe Ingredients

This strawberry chocolate protein smoothie is made with only 5 ingredients.

  • โ€‹2 cups almond milk
  • 1 cup (140g) frozen strawberries
  • 1 Tbsp raw cacao powder
  • 1Tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder
ingredients in separate glass bowls

Ingredients Tips and Substitutions

This recipe calls for almond milk, but you can use any non-dairy milk. Cashew milk and oat milk are other great options.

Don’t let frozen fool you! Frozen strawberries are flash-frozen at peak ripeness, locking in their sweetness and nutrients. Another beauty of using frozen strawberries is that you won’t need to add any ice cubes. If you do opt for fresh strawberries then you will need to add a handful of ice to the blender.

While this chocolate protein strawberry smoothie has no added sugar it is naturally sweetened with maple syrup. You can also try it with honey if you’d like.

Chocolate protein powder adds a little bit of extra protein. Keep in mind, that not all protein powders are created equal. Choose a high-quality protein powder that is free from artificial sweeteners and unnecessary additives.

Cacao or Cocoa

The chocolate flavor of this smoothie comes from the cacao powder and the protein powder. If you don’t have cacao then you can use unsweetened cocoa powder. There are a few differences to note between cacao and cocoa. There are a few key differences:

  • Processing: Raw cacao powder is minimally processed. The beans are fermented, dried at low temperatures, and then ground into a powder. Cocoa powder, on the other hand, is roasted at much higher temperatures which alters the flavor and nutrient profile.
  • Taste: Raw cacao powder has a more bitter taste compared to cocoa powder, which is milder and sometimes has a hint of sweetness due to the roasting process.
  • Nutrients: Raw cacao powder generally retains more nutrients due to the lower processing temperatures. It’s a good source of antioxidants, fiber, and minerals like magnesium and iron.

So, while they can be substituted for each other in recipes,  be aware of the potential taste difference and the impact on the nutritional content.

How to Make a Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie

First, you will need a high-speed blender. I have the Vitamix blender, and it’s amazing.

I always try to follow my own instructions for how to make breakfast smoothies, when adding ingredients to the blender.

First, pour the almond milk into the blender.

Then add the maple syrup.

Next, add the frozen berries to the blender.

Lastly, add the cacao powder and the protein powder.

Blend until smooth. When making a fruit smoothie with frozen fruit make sure to allow enough time for the blender to break down and blend the frozen chunks. Similarly, when using fresh fruit, allow the time for the blender to break down the ice.

When ready, pour into a tall glass.
