What You Will Need to Microwave Poached Eggs in a Cup
For this poached egg microwave technique, you will need large eggs, a glass cup, and some water.
I suggest using a clear glass cup so that you can see the doneness of the poached egg through the glass when you check on it during the egg cooking process. When poaching eggs, make sure to use fresh eggs.
How to Poach an Egg in the Microwave
First, crack a raw egg into the glass cup.
Next, gently add water to the glass.
The amount of water should be about double the amount of space that the egg takes up in the glass.
How Long To Microwave Poached Eggs in a Cup
Place the glass with the egg and water into the microwave. Cook in 15-second increments. Check on the doneness at each 15-second mark, as the egg cooks in the hot water.
There is no perfect cooking time when it comes to microwaving poached eggs. This is due to the differences in microwave ovens, the size of your eggs, and each person’s personal preference.
There are also different levels of ‘done’. Poached eggs are known for their firm whites and runny egg yolks.
Where one person may love a runny yolk, another prefers a creamy firmer yolk.
The same goes for the whites. Some may like their egg white on the soft side whereas others like fully firm set whites. No matter how you take your poached eggs there is no right or wrong way.
When the poached egg is cooked to your preferred doneness level remove the cup from the microwave.
For my microwave, I find that a one-minute cook time is perfect.
Remove the egg from the cup. You can attempt to scoop the egg out with a slotted spoon, but I find it much easier to pour the egg out onto a large slotted spoon. Then sit the spoon on top of a paper towel to allow the excess water to drain.
