Then serve your breakfast using any of your favorite egg poacher recipes.
Whether you like your poached eggs with runny yolk or slightly cooked but still creamy yolk it all comes down to the cook time. I’ll show you how to use an egg poacher to make the best-poached eggs.
What You Need To Poach an Egg in a Poacher
To make the best-poached eggs with a poacher you will need large eggs, a pot of water, white vinegar, and your egg poacher. You will also need a timer, you can use your watch, oven clock, or cell phone. That’s the easy part!
There are numerous different ways to poach an egg, and each will create different egg-poaching experiences. Believe it or not, egg poachers come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, and materials.

This particular example of how to poach an egg in a poacher is to show how to use a silicone egg poacher. This egg poacher is extremely easy to use and can be found online here: egg poacher set.
This silicone egg poacher is designed to mimic the traditional water bath method of poaching eggs. The shape keeps the egg contained while it cooks, and keeps the shape. It is also high heat-resistant, easy to clean, and folds over itself for easy storage.
How to Use an Egg Poacher
First, place the egg poacher in a medium-sized pot. I love my Caraway nonstick, non-toxic, ceramic cookware. You can find it online here: Caraway Cookware.
Next, fill the pot with enough water to cover half of the poacher.
Add a little vinegar to the pot. You only need a splash or 1-2 tsp of vinegar. If you prefer firm whites then you don’t want to skip this part because the white vinegar will help to solidify the egg whites.
Then place the pot on the stove over medium-high heat until it starts to boil. Once it starts to boil reduce it to medium heat, and simmer.
When you reach a very gentle simmer crack the egg into the center of the poacher, and immediately start your timer.
How Long to Poach an Egg in a Poacher
Keep the heat low and maintain a gentle simmer. The egg will cook in the hot water.
The cooking time will vary depending on the size of the egg, and how you prefer your cooked eggs. The typical cook time for how long to cook poached eggs falls between 3-4 minutes. Here is a basic chart for suggested cooking times for how long to poach an egg for runny yolks. If you like loose egg whites, firmer whites, creamy yolks, or cooked through yolks similar to hard-boiled eggs you will have to adjust accordingly.
Medium Eggs | between 3:00 and 3:15 |
Large Eggs | between 3:00 and 3:30 |
Jumbo Eggs | between 3:30 and 4:00 |
When you reach your perfect poached egg time remove the egg poacher from the pot. For example, this egg is cooked in simmering water for 3:30 minutes.
Then remove the finished poached egg using a slotted spoon, like this one here: slotted spoon.
Transfer the egg to a paper towel-lined plate to remove the excess water, and trim any excess egg white if desired.
How to Serve Poached Eggs
Now that you know how to cook the perfect poached egg using this simple method, serve it up with your favorite toppings.
You can enjoy your poached eggs alone or on an English muffin with hollandaise sauce. To keep it healthy I like it with a little salt on grain-free sourdough bread, avocado, and micro greens.
