Painted Mahogany Tables

Let’s chat about these vintage mahogany tables. They came to me tired and worn, water stained and a bit ragged but had so much life left to them.  Being made of solid mahogany with the label to prove it, I knew they had already had many years of life behind them and so much history.  The hardware, though dirty was gorgeous underneath! They needed to be rescued.

I researched the label inside and discovered that mahogany tables made prior to 1969 received a sticker to certify that they were genuine mahogany along with a number indicating where they were made.  These little gems were made by the Imperial Furniture Co. in Grand Rapids Michigan and featured the logo from 1939.

The Project – Prep for Paint

I decided to get to work and sand down the tops to bare wood and save the gorgeous wood grain of these mahogany tables. The stains, water rings, dents, and dings were removed. The tops are now super smooth and ready for new stain.

The original hardware has gone from dirty to dashing. I adore the unique curves to these pulls.

The bodies were hand painted a creamy mushroom to complete the look.  This new look brings these handsome fellas back to life for another 50-75 years to come.

The Result – Painted Mahogany Tables

Some would be against painting over genuine mahogany, and I get it, I do. But I would like to think I did justice by these considering the condition they were in. I truly think they look lovely now.

  1. Did you do a primer to cover the mahogany? When I paint mahogany it just bleeds through.

    1. hi, no primer was needed on this project. the paint has great coverage 🙂

Gorgeous!! Your paint color is beautiful wth the stain. I have my parents’ original bedroom furniture. They were married in 1947 and I was born in 1949 but not sure what year they are from. They were refinished about 40 years ago but the night stand and the mirrored dressing table have damage on the top. I guess I should research to see when they were made. They are high quality – my parents always bought the best. I also have a solid cherry 7 drawer desk in beautiful condition – so, so heavy. I cherish these pieces and am so glad they took care of them.

    1. thats awesome Carol. The pieces with family history always mean the most and are the most cherished <3
